F'heavenssakes, why an ISLAND?

As soon as the carnival had started packing up, Irina knew she had to face the boat, but for the life of her (or perhaps some more appropriate expression), she hated water. She'd made it as far as the boardwalk before starting to tremble, and she froze before she'd gone five paces down the dock. Her body couldn't quite decide if the boardwalk was 'ground', or if she should sink through it down to the actual ground below the lapping waves.

I can't do this. Irina stared at her feet, barely visible against the wooden slats, and wished she were anywhere but here. The plane ride from the US had been bad, but she'd managed it. She just didn't have the option of sleeping this trip away in the bottom of someone's luggage. Tivona, why the hell did you make me come? she whined silently at the mentor figure who had eventually talked her into coming.

This was going to take her some time, she realized, and Hendry was already waiting for her. No doubt he'd be annoyed with her, too, and that was not how she'd anticipated arriving here.
