His lips irked with visible irritation - if it hadn't already been established that the boy was trying to wind him up, then it was certainly obvious now. While the boy's eyes were shut, he allowed himself the relief of shaking his clenched hand at him, imagining that the boy's neck was somewhere between his index finger and thumb.

It was a weak relief.

He'd returned to his normal stance by the time Esteban opened his eyes again. And strangely enough, his request is tempting. Perhaps he really could choke him again. Perhaps he could find something in these dungeons to impale him with. Yet, it struck him as unreasonable still. Had he really done everything that he could..? "How..." he trailed off in thought. "...How could I kill you anyway? If I'm not real? Would you even really die?"

Perhaps he could be negotiated still. Reasoned with... Sner didn't have much hope, but he was reluctant to allow himself to be forced into the worst-case scenario so quickly.

There. Esteban tilted his head to the side as far as it would go, which was a bit farther than should humanly be possible, chains jingling as his body shifted its position. A twisted grin pulled up his lip. "Well, we won't know 'till we try, right? Ya know you want to. It'll feel so good, to purge my loathful existence from the Island, Mr. Watchman." He made it sound like an insult. "Or are you scared? Issat mean lady gonna slap ya if you disobey?"

Not that he actually dared hope Sner would kill him, no, that would be too nice; but he would grab whatever petty sadistic pleasure he could. What else did he have?

With a low, barking laugh, he straightened his spine again. The blanket stayed hanging askew off his shoulder, half of his torso with its bandages uncovered.

Sner knew that he was not meant to let the prisoner see that his words had any effect at all. This was a mind game, surely - the kid wanted to see him crack and falter, he wanted to pry into a vulnerable spot. He'd seen it before. Yet, at his words, he couldn't strop his teeth from gritting. He swallowed his annoyance, pausing so that he could clear his mind.

He seemed about to reply to him, before apparently changing his mind to turn instead. He stormed out the cell, eyes squinting around the cold, dank dungeon before landing on a loose iron bar from another cell. He roughly yanked it from its place, before returning to the boy. His gaze glided over his form, expression cold and unsympathetic, before he raised the bar and placed the end of it roughly where he assumed the heart to be. The touch had been light at first, but then he pressed his weight onto it with a sharp jerk, holding it there firmly. With enough force and momentum behind it, he was confident in his ability to put the poor fiend out of his misery.

All the while, he studied his expression. Would there be fear? Pain? Regret? Or would there simply be that same callous sneer he was becoming adjusted to. At this point, optimism seemed worthless. But he had to see.

At first, Esteban thought that Sner simply had had enough -- and though he tried to tell himself 'good grief', he couldn't help but frown. It meant a return to the complete boredom of an empty cell. His head hung a little.

But then, there was a small clang and something like a grinding noise, and as he looked back up quickly again he saw the watchman returning. With a sharp stick. He watched him approach and put the pointy end to Esteban's chest. Could it be? Was he serious? The changeling's gaze traveled up from the bar to Sner's face and slowly, an elated grin spread his lips. "C'man then," he tempted hoarsely. "Show us who's boss." Oh, the things he would show the birdman with that pole the moment he was reborn. He licked his dry lips. "It'll feel soo good."

It wasn't fear, nor was it even indifference or anger. It was excitement. Joy. Thrill. The sheer wrongness of it caught him off guard. Most men would quiver at the sight of impending death, or they’d straighten their faces so they could at least die with some semblance of dignity. But this boy craved it. It wasn’t natural. It wasn’t...

He hadn’t lost his touch, had he? He pulled the stick back, bracing himself for the next strike. His grip tightened on the iron bar, and he glared directly into the boy’s eyes, the orange light of the fire glinting off them. His breath became restrained as he held the position, mentally preparing himself. Then suddenly, he flipped the bar around so that the blunt end pointed towards him. He gave a great swing towards the side of Esteban’s face, a grunt escaping from between his teeth. It wouldn’t kill him. But it sure as hell might break something.

The cold metal's scratch felt like a lover's caress, with all its promise of delights to be had. Esteban's eyes were bright with a feverish ecstasy, and though Sner looked into them, his gaze was glued to the bar itself. Soon. Soon.

Then, the bar drew back, and Esteban's breath hitched in anticipation. The next move what was not what he expected, though. Brow furrowing, the changeling looked up to the watchman in confusion -- and then his head was propelled to the side with the force of the blow, his whole body swaying, chains giving a merry jingle.

For a moment, he hung still. His head was empty and his mouth full of blood.

Slowly, he lifted his head again, aiming a half-lidded look at Sner as he spat out a chunk of tooth in a spray of green at the man.

"Typical."

He stared, closing one eye as as a few drops hit his cheek. He didn't even see where the tooth went. All he could do was bore into Esteban's face with his vapid eyes, emotion draining from his expression. He was silent, the weapon hanging limply by his side. It slipped from his grasp, landing on the cold stones with a jarring clatter.

He made a half-choked noise as he stepped back. "...Bullshit," he finally forced out, expression shifting into a disbelieving sneer. "You are nothing but bullshit."

With that, he twisted around and made out the cell. He snatched up the torch and whisked it away as he went, marching straight towards where he came. As he reached the exit, he waved it brusquely in the air until the flame withered out, before abandoning it and clambering out. He took one look back at the stairway leading to the black, gaping void he'd departed from, then slammed the door shut. Then, as he stormed away, he promised himself that he would not be coming back.

Esteban stared at him, unflinching, even as the bar fell noisily to the floor. Some warmth creeped over his face and he knew his it would be swollen. Well, the monkey would have a surprise, he mused, as he watched the watchman storm away. He felt detached. When disappointment came as often as to him, one just got used to it.

He spat out some more blood, then let his head drop and himself drift away.

It didn't matter. Soon, things would change.
